Serial Pedophile ex-Bega Cheese boss has time cut | Perth Now

Serial child sex offender and former Bega Cheese boss Maurice Van Ryn has had two months cut from his minimum jail sentence after a successful appeal.Van Ryn, 59, was last year handed a non-parole period of seven years for sexually abusing nine children over a decade but the term was almost doubled in the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal to a minimum of 13 years and six months.Following appeals to the High Court and again in the NSW Appeal Court against the jail time he was given for offences against one of his victims and the way in which that affected his aggregate sentence, Van Ryn has been re-sentenced to a minimum 13 years and four months.Initially he was sentenced to a maximum two years and two months, with a non-parole period of one year and seven months, over one of the 14 charges for which he was imprisoned. But this was quashed on Friday and he was re-sentenced over the same charge to a maximum one year and eight months’ jail with a non-parole period of one year and three months. This affected his aggregate sentence, with two months being trimmed from the total time he will spend incarcerated. In September 2015, Van Ryn pleaded guilty to abusing nine children between 2003 and 2014.He had regularly molested victims in a swimming pool and persistently abused one teenage boy under the pretext of “helping him with computer games”.During the proceedings Van Ryn, who was chief executive of Bega Cheese for 15 years, had told the District Court he was sorry for any harm he “might” have done.
